Verda Claybrooks Clark Obituary

Live Stream

Verda (Seed) Claybrooks-Clark departed this life February 16, 2024, and made her transition into her heavenly home surrounded by all six of her children at the time of her departure. As she made her transition, her children witnessed her reach up her hands to the heavens as she took her last breath. Verda was born July 18, 1933, in Dublin, Georgia, to the union of David and Bessie (Williams) Seed was the last born of eight children. In 1942 the family decided to leave their Georgia home and migrate to Detroit, Michigan, in search of a better life for them and their children. But after their arrival, they realized the opportunity for viable employment wasn’t what they had previously expected. However as a result of WW2, the family moved to Willow Run, Michigan, in 1949, where her father, David Seed was able to bring to fruition his search for viable employment working on the assembly line building B-29 bomber airplanes for the US military's Willow Run bomber plant. During that time Verda attended Ypsilanti high school and graduated in 1953. Upon graduation she started working as a receptionist in a local doctor’s office. As her family continued to grow she felt the need to become a stay-at-home mother to her six children, Michael Garland, Carol Ford, Valerie (Ford)Pugh, Donna Ford, Judy (Ford) Page and Mark Ford. After her children had grown older, she chose to reenter the workforce. She first found a job at the Veterans Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where she met and eventually married Fred Claybrooks in 1968. Later on, she sought a job with hours that would better accommodate her children's school schedule, allowing her to be home when they returned from school each day. Her search for a more suitable work schedule led her to the University of Michigan hospital, where she worked until she retired.

Shortly after retiring, Verda's husband, Fred Claybrooks also retired, and soon after  passed away in 1996. In 1999, she married Leo Clark, her high school sweetheart, and they remained together for seventeen years until his death in 2016. Despite not having a college degree, Verda possessed a "P.H.D” in the school of life—Poor, Hungry, and Driven—and used her life experiences to shape each of her six children into successful, well-adjusted adults. Her strong faith in Christ began at an early age when she accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior at Brown Chapel A.M.E church in Ypsilanti, MI. Throughout her years at the church, she served on the usher board, various committees, and community outreach programs, including a program aimed at providing meals to underprivileged members of the Ypsilanti community.

Verda was preceded in by her husbands Fred Claybrooks and Leo Clark parents David and Bessie(Williams) Seed, six of her siblings, Euphrates Seed, Calvin Seed, Booker (BT) Seed, Lamar Seed, Elmira(Seed) Liggons, Beaulah(Seed) Leggett, nephews: James Seed, Kennth Seed, Calvin (Brother) Seed Jr.,Barry Lawson, nieces: Shirley Seed, Judy Mae, Charlene (Lawson) Hobson.
