Percy Wright Obituary

In Loving Memory of Percy Wright

Percy Wright was born in Tchula, Mississippi, on November 30, 1949, to Elnora "Lulu" Williams and John Streeter. He was the fourth of nine children. The family moved to Michigan in the early 1950s, where Percy grew up and attended Whitmore Lake Public Schools, graduating with pride.

In pursuit of higher education, Percy earned a basketball scholarship to Ferris State University. There, his dedication to both academics and athletics laid the foundation for a life of discipline and commitment. After completing his education, Percy joined the police force in 1971, making history as one of the first Black officers in the area. His work was marked by courage, professionalism, and a passion for serving the community. It was during his time on the force that he met his future wife, Gwendolyn Dian, while patrolling in his “UNIFORM”. This  set the stage for continuing the Wright lineage. Together, they raised three children: Percy (Yatti), Brian (Chu) and Brendea (Dee Dee).

After leaving the police department, Percy transitioned to a career with Domino’s International Security, where he was director of national security. He also held various roles as a security consultant. He later worked in the auto industry, bringing the same diligence and expertise to every position he held. His strong work ethic and leadership left a lasting impact on every organization he was a part of.

Outside of his professional life, Percy was deeply involved in his community. He was a member of Second Baptist Church of Ann Arbor. He also dedicated over 20 years of his life coaching youth sports, including the Junior Wolverines and the East Eagles. Percy’s love for sports was unmatched; he was an avid Michigan fan and a talented softball player, earning the nickname "Primo." His enthusiasm for the game was contagious, and his presence on the field was unforgettable. Percy also enjoyed playing golf, where he continued to share his love for sports and connect with others.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elnora "Lulu" Williams and John Streeter; his siblings, Mary Lee, Evelyn "Bobbi" Wright and Will Wright; and his beloved granddaughter, Sabrina. Percy leaves behind his Aunt Virginia, five siblings: Corrine (Oscar) Joseph, Michael (Janice) Williams, Tony Williams (Shelley Jones), Elizabeth Williams, and Tracy Williams. He is also survived by his former spouse, Dian Wright. His children Percy (Tonai) Wright, Brian (Theresa) Wright, Brendea (Marques) Johnson. His legacy will live on through his 11 grandchildren he adored: Aryanna, Jordan (LaVonte), Zaria, Brian (Wesleyann), Tyriq, Amaya, Torren, Anthony, Jaylah, Gabrielle, as well as two great-grandchildren, Kason Wright and Jade Verdell. Percy was also eagerly awaiting the arrival of another great-grand daughter. He was a loving father and grandfather who treasured the time spent with his children and grandchildren. He remained committed to raising his children with Dian, and worked tirelessly to ensure their well-being and success. He was survived by a host of nieces, nephews cousins and friends.
