Nancy McGowan-Miller Obituary

Created in God’s own image, Nancy Virginia Bearyman was born to Elza Prentice Bearyman and Freddie Mae (Wesson) Bearyman on Saturday, April 16, 1949, in Nashville, Arkansas. Nancy was the first daughter and second oldest child born to this union.

Christened as infants, Nancy and her brothers served in many different capacities at her family’s church, Saint James Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Nashville, AR. Following her mother’s footsteps, she started the Flint Mission CME church out of her home on Dupont street. Nancy was Minister of Music at Dozier Memorial CME Church under the late Rev. William Johnson and Rev. Stanley Sprewer. She was also Minister of Music at St. James CME Church Flint under the late Elder Harry L. Redds. She served as Minister of Music for many years prior to becoming Assistant Pastor under the leadership of the late, Rev. Dr. Isaiah Scipio Jr. After her marital union with Smiley McGowan, Rev. Nancy McGowan-Miller transitioned to St. Peter CME church as Minister of Music.

Throughout her journey, she was an active Sunday School and Bible Study teacher. After the passing of Rev. Scipio, Rev. Nancy McGowan-Miller returned to Dozier Memorial as Pastor before transitioning to Bray Temple CME. During her years as an Ordained Elder in full connection, she also served at Triumphant Temple of Praise before returning to St. Peter CME as Assistant Pastor until retirement. Rev. Nancy McGowan-Miller has always been a follower of Christ! Rev. Nancy McGowan-Miller was a faithful and devoted member to the CME church for over 70 years. Although retired, Rev. Nancy McGowan-Miller continued to spread the word of God at Lockwood of Genesee Assisted Living every Sunday.

On Thursday, March 2, 2023 after evening tide, Nancy transitioned peacefully into eternal life to receive her crown at home, surrounded by family. She leaves us to cherish her many memories: son, William L.G. (Cornelia) Bearyman of Atlanta, GA; two daughters Mitzi M. McGowan of Louisville, KY; Naundi P. (Greg) Ivory, and granddaughter Nia R.
