OBITUARY
“To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under the heaven. A time to be born and a time to die; a time to weep and a time to mourn.” Ecclesiastes 3:1-2a
The time to be born for Girlly was Saturday, April 9, 1932, in Taylor, Mississippi. It was a time to laugh for Berkley and Millie Hewlett Mitchell, the proud parents. Girlly was the youngest of seventeen children.
She gave her life to Christ at an early age and joined Cyress Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Oxford, Mississippi. She attended Taylor Vocation High School in Taylor. She relocated to Detroit, Michigan to seek job opportunities.
On Saturday, August 6. 1955, she was united in Holy Matrimony with Robert McGlown. God blessed them with one daughter, Robin.
In Detroit, she joined New Providence Missionary Baptist Church, where she served on the Usher ministry. Later she moved to Belleville, Michigan and joined First Missionary Baptist Church where she served with the Nurses Guild. She served faithfully until her death.
Girlly was a loving and devoted wife and mother. She loved God, her husband, her family and her church. She enjoyed helping her family and friends. She worked hard during her life and retired from the State of Michigan. She loved retirement and spent her days relaxing and shopping and had a classy outfit for every occasion. She enjoyed discussing current events and daily reading the newspaper and watching TV. Girlly was outspoken and didn’t hesitate to share her opinion in a humorous way. Her life experiences allowed her to be a great source of wisdom.
For Girlly, Monday, June 3, 2024, was a time to die and a time to be reunited with those who she loved that preceded her through Christ.
In a time to weep, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Robin, her parents, and sixteen siblings.
In this time to mourn, she leaves to cherish her memory, her devoted husband, Robert McGlown of Belleville, Michigan; loving nephew and niece, Myron (Terrilyn) Frierson of Okemos, Michigan and Eulastine (Leroy) Thompson of Taylor, Mississippi; stepdaughter, Kaamilya “Jackie” Rashid; step-grandchildren, Sameerah (Maxwell) Ambris and Frank Murphy, step-great-grandchildren, Maxwell Ambris Jr., Britanna Murphy, and Joyce Murphy; many other nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
