Born in Cascade in the parish of Portland on the beautiful Caribbean island of Jamaica on December 14, 1931, Ena Maude Headlam was the last of four girls and the 7th of 9 children born to Adeline and Herbert Headlam. Ena, affectionately called “Princess”, “Aunt Princess’, ‘The Queen” is predeceased by all her siblings.

Trained as a teacher at Bethlehem Training College in the parish of St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, Ena taught English at the secondary level of various schools (including Holy Childhood) in Jamaica before migrating to the USA in April 1967.

Continuing her education in New York, she attended Mills College of Education, where she obtained her Bachelor's Degree, and Hunter College where she completed her Master's degree. She also took courses at Queens College for Drama.  These accomplishments qualified her for her 15-year stint as a teacher at the primary level both in the New York public school system, and in private schooling, a period which she enjoyed thoroughly.  She was always thrilled and energized by the sounds of laughing children and was especially pleased with her achievements among her students who were academically challenged.

In 2001 Ena moved from the hustle and bustle of the New York Metropolis, to embrace the wide-open spaces of Ypsilanti, Michigan. Here, she did a refresher course in Drama at the Washtenaw Community College and actively participated in Dramatic presentations.

Ena was a lover of the arts.  She loved music, and poetry, and painting, and creating art with her garden filled with a riot of colours and flowering plants.

She loved poetry and is the author of two poetry books, both written after her retirement: A Grain of Sand...A Grain of Hope, which is a collection of poems on the impact of cancer; and Mother I Come, in honor of Princess Diana.

Let’s talk about another of her loves: flowers – While others have a green thumb, she had full-blown green hands as evidenced by her well-tended garden.

Ena was very kind-hearted, and she gave generously to those in need, whether or not she knew them personally. She constantly threw open the doors of her house and her heart, welcoming her nieces, her nephew, and their friends to share in fellowship and friendship.

In her 95th year, on January 11, 2026, Ena Maude Headlam, Aunt Princess, the Queen, went to sleep.

May she rest in peace till the resurrection morning.
