Mr. Edward L. Currie, Sr. was born on October 31, 1931, in Brownsville, Tennessee, to Tobe and Octiva Currie. On Wednesday, August 6, 2025, Edward passed away peacefully, surrounded by his son, Tyrone, and his dedicated caregiver, Ms. Maggie Miller.
After completing high school in 1950, Edward enlisted in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1954. Following his discharge, he relocated to Ypsilanti, MI.
On May 31, 1955, he married Jean Hall, and from this union, they were blessed with two sons: Edward Jr. (deceased) and Tyrone Currie.
Edward was employed at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, MI, while also attending Detroit Barber School. After obtaining his barber license, he became a full-time barber at Hall’s Barber Shop on Harriett Street in Ypsilanti, MI.
Edward acquired his own barber shop located at 432 Harriett Street, which became Currie’s Barbershop, where he worked as a full-time barber for 63 years until his health began to decline. He played a significant role in assisting individuals in finding employment in Ypsilanti, MI.
Following the passing of his wife, Lanore Rondina, Edward took ownership of Lucille’s Funeral Home, which is currently known as C&H Community Home For Funerals.
Edward also served on the Board of Parkview Apartments for many years.
Edward accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of Brown Chapel AME Church, where he worshiped for many years and served on the Trustee Board. In his later years, he fellowshipped at Second Baptist Church, where he attended regularly until his health deteriorated.
He leaves to cherish his memories son, Tyrone Currie; his stepdaughter, Camille (John) Hudson; two step-grandchildren, Courtney Hudson and Shannon (Johnny) Epps; as well as three step-great-grandchildren, Sophia, Raquel, and Johnny. He also leaves behind three brothers, James L. West (Mae) from Florissant, MO, Glendale West from Decatur, IL, and Willie Allen West from Jackson, TN. Additionally, he is survived by three sisters, Elnora West from Decatur, IL, Florida A. Williams from Decatur, IL, and Ruby Mae West from Brownsville, TN. Special caregivers include Maggie Miller, Barbara Jones-Picou, Debra Williams-Smith, Denise Amison, Chalanda Jimerson, Rhonda Sullivan, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Edward was preceded in death by his wife, Lanore M. Currie; his son, Edward Currie, Jr.; and his grandchildren, Zoe E. Currie and Zachary J. Currie. He was also predeceased by his parents, as well as his brothers, Hayes West, Jr., Thurman West, Sr., Willie James West, Ellis West, and John Eli West.
