David LeeRoy Harris, age 77, was born on December 27, 1946, in Ann Arbor, Michigan to David Murdock Harris and Zenoby (Weathers) Harris. He transitioned on Sunday, October 27, 2024, in Gilmer, Texas. David was fondly referred to as “LeRoy,” “Big Dave,” and “Street Preacher” by his family and friends.
David attended Ypsilanti public schools. He graduated from Ypsilanti High School in 1965 and attended Washtenaw Community College and Eastern Michigan University. He was married to Mary Jo (Smith) Harris who preceded him in death.
David worked at Ford Motor Co, was an Insurance Salesman, a Cement Finisher and had other construction jobs. He was a biker who loved the thrills of riding his motorcycle across America’s beautifully scenic landscape. He was also an over-the-road truck driver for over 20 years then retired due to health conditions.
In addition to his wife, David was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Verna Deen Vinson and Joan Elaine Odom, and two brothers, Therlon Gene Harris, and Harold Eugene Harris. In addition to his daughter, Latanya Harris, he is survived by a sister, Francine Jefferson, a brother Ladel Kenon Harris, two close friends, Jacobe Phelps and Johnnie Johnson, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, stepchildren, other family members, and friends.
He was a biblical scholar who blessed others as a teacher and mentor. His mentees express gratitude for his help which elevated their understanding to higher heights with his broad range and in-depth knowledge of the Holy Bible, the Quran, and various other religious beliefs and writings. LeeRoy always had something funny or witty to say which brought joy and laughter to others.
David LeeRoy Harris is dearly loved and will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved him. His favorite Bible verse was Proverb 3:5-6 KJV:
5. Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not to your own understanding.
6. In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path.
