David Atkins Obituary

David Brian Atkins of Ypsilanti MI, age 72, passed away after a long illness on Sunday April 4, 2026. He was born on December 12, 1953 and was the youngest child of Ada Thierry and Levi Simpson. David was a graduate of Willow Run High School, class of 1971.  He went on to earn an Associate’s Degree from Washtenaw Community College.

 

David worked at the University of Michigan for over 20 years before retiring and moving to Las Vegas, NV. In 2026 he returned to Ypsilanti in 2006 to be closer to his beloved family.  

 

In his personal life David found joy in a variety of activities. He was an avid bowler for many years, he was a familiar presence in several local leagues. He also had a deep appreciation for jazz music, often spending hours listening, reflecting, and sharing his thoughts with others.

 

David was known for having thoughtful conversations about both local and world events, having a perspective on many different topics. He was wonderful at connecting with people and striking up conversations with ease and leaving a lasting impression wherever he went. Above all, he will be remembered for his genuine kindness, warm spirit, and the many friendships he formed throughout his life.

 

David is survived by his brothers Gregory Atkins of Ann Arbor and Ronald Atkins of Bluffton, OH) as well as a host of nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Judith Atkins and brothers Perry Thierry, Donald Atkins and Larry Atkins.
