Julius Rutledge Obituary

After a brief illness, Julius L. Rutledge passed peacefully on March 4, 2023, at the age of 76. He was born on February 12, 1947, in Lafayette, Alabama (Chambers County). His parents, Rev. David and Ida L. Rutledge preceded him in death.

Julius grew up in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He accepted Christ at an early age and was an active member of the Youth Choir at Westside Baptist. After high school graduation, he attended Tennessee State University. While at the university, he was called into the Army during the Viet Nam era. He was based at Fort Dix, New Jersey, but spent most of his military service in Germany. Upon being Honorably discharged, he moved to Ypsilanti, Michigan to be close to his big brother David. Not long after arriving in Ypsilanti, he made Second Baptist his church home. After deciding to live in the Ypsilanti community, Julius found employment quickly at the General Motors Hydramatic Plant in Ypsilanti. He worked there as a Quality Control Inspector for 36 years until retiring in 2007.

Julius was gregarious, generous, and humorous. He loved to laugh and participate in fun activities like sports and fishing. During one of these activities, he met Terri Sims and it was love at first sight. They married on June 7, 1977. Two children were born to this union: Julius L. Rutledge II (LaShonda) and Sharia R. Rutledge. Julius would speak of Terri as the love of his life. They were married for 29 years. She preceded him in death.

Julius leaves a legacy of hard work and a determined spirit. He is mourned by his older brothers, Willie David Rutledge (Marian) and David E. Rutledge; grandchildren, Julius L. Rutledge III, Jailen, Jamyiha, Jamarcus, Christopher Greer, Jr., Jakhia Dowery, great grandchild, Nova, and a host of brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
